Can Exercise Do Away With Infertility?

June 27, 2008 · Filed Under Exercise, Nutrition · 3 Comments

I just got done reading an article by Elizabeth Wade at the American Council of Science and Health website titled Judging a Book by Its Cover (and Its Website): “The Fertility Diet”.  She has taken the view, which I too believe is correct, that researchers at the Harvard Public Health Review came to a too easy conclusion that diet and exercise will help women that have had problems to conceive from their review of the book “The Fertility Diet“.

You see a study of 400 women that had a condition called ovulatory infertility, or irregular ovulation were helped with a diet that reduced trans fat.  The women were given a plan that consisted of eating more beans, nuts, and other plant proteins, whole grains such as oatmeal and barley, and having a glass of whole milk or other full-fat dairy product every day.  The ability to conceive a child increased when on this diet then what they had been eating before.

The concept is great; however, the data needed to be investigated more fully before statements such as “Now there’s a safer, natural, and virtually free way to improve fertility that’s available to all” is accurate.  The information collected needs to be researched by others before this can be considered correct.  The one statement that Ms. Wad says and is at the heart of her criticism is that the researches give the impression that women that have a hard time with conception may not be trying as hard as they could through diet and exercise.
